Let’s Enjoy a Japanese-Style Home Party!
Hello there!
It’s a bank holiday this weekend — perhaps some of you are planning a cosy get-together with friends or family at home?
Do you know what kinds of foods are enjoyed at Japanese home gatherings? Takoyaki? Hotpot? Those are certainly popular — but my recommendation is "Temakizushi" (hand-rolled sushi)! It’s a much-loved style in Japan, perfect for bringing everyone together around the table.
Today, let me introduce some useful tools for enjoying Temakizushi at home 👐
🍣
Step1: Prepare the Perfect Sushi Rice
Sushi rice is the key to good sushi. With the right tools, you can get the perfect texture and taste.
-Shamoji (Rice scoop)
Essential for gently mixing rice and vinegar without crushing the grains.

- Uchiwa (Fan)
Cooling the rice helps remove excess moisture and gives it a fluffy finish. Fan it gently as you mix!

- Ohitsu (Wooden Rice Container)
Keeps sushi rice moist and fresh without becoming soggy. It also looks lovely on the table.

🍣🍣
Step2: Roll, Dip, and Enjoy!
Now for the fun part — rolling and eating! These items make the experience smooth, stylish, and fun.
- Makisu (Rolling Mat)
The classic tool for rolling sushi. Place the nori, spread the rice, add your fillings, and roll it up!
A plastic mat is especially easy to clean and reuse.

- Soy Sauce Dishes
No sushi is complete without soy sauce. Small, colourful dishes add a lovely touch to the table.

Some designs even include a space for dipping and a spot to rest your sushi.

- Grater for Wasabi
Freshly grated wasabi brings out an amazing aroma and flavour.
No wasabi root? Try horseradish instead!

💡Tip: Classic sashimi like tuna or sea bream is of course great, but feel free to get creative — canned fish, seafood sticks, avocado, or even salads make for fun fillings. Everyone can customise their own roll!
🍣🍣🍣
Step3: Make It Extra Special
Looking to take your sushi party to the next level? Try these extra touches for an even more authentic feel:
- Sake Set
Pairing sushi with alcohol? Absolutely Japanese Sake! A traditional sake set makes the whole experience even more special.

- Yanagiba Knife
Want to slice sashimi yourself? Try using a Yanagiba — a traditional single-edged knife used by professional sushi chefs. It’s sharp, precise, and deeply satisfying to use.
